Hard Lessons (Thanks, Amazon) Breathe New Life Into Retail Stores

Malls are being hollowed out. Shops are closing by the thousands. Retailers are going bankrupt.

But it may be too early to declare the death of retail. Americans have started shopping more — in stores.

From the garden section at Walmart to the diamond counters at Tiffany & Company, old-school retailers are experiencing some of their best sales growth in years.

The strong revenues start with a roaring economy and an optimistic consumer. With more cash in their wallets from the tax cuts, Americans have been spending more.

The boom also reflects a broad reordering of the $3.5 trillion industry, with fewer retailers capturing more of the gains. Stores that have learned how to match the ease and instant gratification of e-commerce shopping are flourishing, while those that have failed to evolve are in bankruptcy or on the brink.

“The retailers that get it recognize that Amazon has forever changed consumer behavior,” said Barbara Kahn, a marketing professor and former director of the retailing center at the Wharton School. “I shouldn’t have to work to shop.”

Many successful stores are now a cross between a fast-food drive-through and a hotel concierge.

Target’s shoppers can order sunscreen or a Tokidoki Unicorno T-shirt on their phone, pull up to the parking lot and have the items brought to their car.

Nordstrom lets customers in some stores make returns by dropping their items into a box and walking out — no human interaction required.

Walmart is employing 25,000 “personal shoppers” to select and package groceries for curbside pickup.

In recent weeks, all three retailers reported stronger-than-expected sales growth for the quarter. Traffic to Target’s stores and online sites grew at its fastest pace since the company began keeping a record a decade ago.

Sears is among the big retailers that are still struggling, but chains like Target, Walmart and Nordstrom are capitalizing on Amazon-inspired innovations.CreditColey Brown for The New York Times

But the pace of closings has slowed, as the most unprofitable stores have been culled and the weakest companies have collapsed. At this time in 2017, nearly 5,700 stores had shut across the United States, according to Coresight Research, a retail analysis and advisory firm. So far this year, about 4,480 have closed.

Some big retailers, like J. C. Penney and Sears, are still sputtering, despite closing lagging stores and sprucing up ones that remain open. But the stronger players are capitalizing on the industry’s failures. Target said it was picking up new toy customers in the wake of the Toys “R” Us liquidation this spring.

The rebound is feeding the broader economy. Hiring is up, with an average of roughly 50,000 retail jobs being added each month since February, according to the National Retail Federation.

Last year, a wave of retail layoffs fueled fears about the long-term health of a huge part of the job market. One in about every 10 American workers is in retail.

“There has been a shakeout, and 2017 was seen as the bottom,” said Melina Cordero, head of retail research for the Americas at the real estate firm CBRE.

Far from retrenching, many retailers are expanding their physical presence or spending billions to overhaul existing stores.

Dollar General plans to open 900 stores this year, as it deepens its reach into rural America with inexpensive food and clothing. The company is building a huge following in areas where there are fewer places to shop, particularly in the South and in parts of the Midwest.

At the other end of the spectrum, Tiffany said it was embarking on a three-year renovation of its flagship store on Fifth Avenue — the setting for the classic film “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and a magnet for tourists.

The newly renovated flagship will probably include expanded retail space as well as hospitality offerings, driven by the success of its in-store “Blue Box” Cafe, which on some days can have a wait list of more than 1,000 people and features a $32 “Breakfast at Tiffany.” Tiffany’s success is built almost entirely on its stores, which account for more than 90 percent of its revenues.

“We have big expectations for this project,” Tiffany’s chief executive, Alessandro Bogliolo, told analysts in a conference call last week. The renovation is expected to reduce the company’s near-term profits, signaling the importance.

One of the most ambitious and costly makeover attempts is taking place at Target. The retailer stormed across the American suburbs more than a decade ago, building hundreds of big-box stores known for affordable, hip clothing and furnishings.

“Our stores are at the center of our strategy, and they are at the center of our success right now,” said Target’s chief executive, Brian Cornell.CreditJeenah Moon for The New York Times

But many shoppers had grown tired of Target’s cavernous stores, and its cool edge had slipped. Target has lately targeted a new market of young urbanites — with plans to open about 30 smaller stores in cities and near college campuses this year.

Many of the new stores are supposed to be all things to all shoppers — what the industry calls an “omni-channel” experience.

Customers can order online and pick up at the store. They can order online and have their purchases delivered home, in some cases, on the same day. Or they can visit the store; employees’ starting salaries were raised in an effort to bolster retention and morale.

“Our stores are at the center of our strategy, and they are at the center of our success right now,” Target’s chief executive, Brian Cornell, said in a conference call last month after the retailer reported its largest quarterly sales growth in 13 years.

Tiffany Tully, 33, said recent changes to her local Target in Minneapolis had made shopping there more pleasant. The clothing displays, she said, feel more carefully curated and “appealing to the eye.” And she likes the convenience of returning Target items she buys online to the store rather than having to ship them, as with Amazon.

“Technically I am a millennial, but I like going to stores,” said Ms. Tully, a stay-at-home mother.

Retailers have been tweaking their store and online strategies for years. But it’s only recently that Amazon’s blistering success has prodded the incumbents to try to reinvent themselves.

Ms. Kahn of the Wharton School said retailers could have made these improvements decades ago if they had focused on what shoppers wanted.

“Most people want to spend less time shopping, not more,” said Ms. Kahn, whose book “The Shopping Revolution” describes the disruption in the retail industry.

She said Amazon’s founder, Jeff Bezos, had understood this when he pioneered the idea of one-click shopping. But many retailers have built their businesses around the opposite idea, like expansive stores that take hours to wade through and commissions that encourage employees to push certain products.

The investments in the new stores and digital offerings are being made at an opportune time, when the strong economy is giving retailers the necessary cash. But any economic weakness could derail their progress before it takes root beyond a few good quarters. Amazon remains the omnipresent cloud, putting pressure on profits and forcing retailers to keep evolving.

“These are big shifts,” said Craig Johnson, president of Customer Growth Partners, a research and consulting firm. “It is like turning around the Queen Mary. You can turn the rudder, but it takes time to gain a purchase.”

A brand is your BOAST.  A Positioning Statement is HOW you use your Brand (your boast).

Branding is not just for businesses. It is the word that has now replaced ‘making your mark’ in the personal career-advancement world. Branding yourself is essential in showing your uniqueness. But, I like to say, personal branding is also about reaching further with emotional factors such as situation handling, and, what innovation and insightful thought you can bring to a business.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This is also when you get to pick the things you like to do. Because the dirty little secret is that when you work at something you like, you succeed at it.

ANOTHER IMPORTANT NOTE: Like a positioning statement, your brand identity should easily ‘start a discussion’.  What is the one thing you can say about yourself to get employers interested to hear more about you and your ideas? Figure it out and build your brand identity around it.

Westchester professional Consulting Career reentry

So, Here’s an idea on how to start building your personal brand:

  1. Analyze your previous work experience; focus on your roles and responsibilities and identify where you were most effective.
  2. Pick the roles or tasks you enjoyed doing the most. Dirty little secret: we excel at what we like to do.
  3. Based on what you find in #1 and #2, explain what was unique about how you handled your responsibilities.
  4. Understand and quantify the growth that your work contributed to the companies you worked for. If you brought in a new client, can you show how much this contributed to the bottom line? You can say for example, ‘brought in a new client worth $50,000 of business yearly’. Thinking in such terms effectively demonstrates the impact and results of your efforts.
  5. Identify areas where you think improvements could be made. Think this through clearly because employers may dwell on this area as they are keen to know if you are likely to repeat the same mistakes.
  6. Re-read the experience list you crafted in #1.
  7. Re-read the list of things you like to do.
  8. Go through your list of where you think improvements could be made.
  9. Once satisfied, come up with ideas that show how your experience and interests will grow your target employer’s business and improve systems.
  10. Lastly, identify why people want to work with you. You can focus on questions such as:
    1. Are you easy to ask a question?
    2. Do you have a good sense of humor?
    3. Do you handle stressful situations with ease? Include relevant examples to support this claim.

The Bottom Line

How to put all this into a Brand Identity:

By now, you have collected your thoughts on your experience, your interests, and, developed ideas on how you could use these to offer solutions to further a company in which you want to advance your career, or, an industry you are re-entering.

This is the way job searches are conducted today. You need to establish your brand so you are not in the dark, therefore, this is worth the time and effort. It’s okay if you have to step away. But always to go back to it until you finish.

Remember, your personal brand is not only a leadership requirement that lets people know who you are and what you stand for, but it’s also a tool that allows you to show your attributes and your visions to really make an impact on your interview.

So, answer this question: (practice writing it to make it so concise that it can be delivered in a short elevator ride because sometimes that is all the time you have to catch an employer’s attention.)

My brand is __________

Example:

I am a 30-year old marketer using my strategic, copywriting, and sales choreography background to arc individuals into better approaches for securing positions in companies rich in leadership and culture.

Google and other providers are forcing our hands in terms of making sure your websites are secure.  Nasty pop-ups will be how it manifests itself.  What can you do?

We fix Surprises, like ‘This Website isn’t secure’ for Westchester businesses

JULY 1st’s SURPRISE:

Google is forcing us to roll out some preventive software upgrades.
If you don’t comply they will put a warning up like this that makes you look like you aren’t a legitimate business.. hurts images.  Anyway, here is the news from Google.
  • Goggle’s Announcement:
Beginning in July 2018, Google will begin labeling websites that are not encrypted as
“Not Secure” in the Chrome browser by displaying a warning message (seen below).
The way you know if your site is encrypted is whether you see http:// (not secure) or
https:// (secure) at the beginning of your website URL in the address bar (outlined in
red below). ALL non-encrypted websites will be affected by this change.
I know that you probably can’t or don’t want to allocate budget to our $150/m maintenance program, that includes this upgrade.
So, you can either wait until your site shows this and your customers start complaining, or
you can have us do a one time SSL installment.
It is $265 now and $345 later when we have to scramble, install the SSL and re-submit your website to Google, when you’ve been labeled as ‘not secure’.  This included the SSL certificate which we purchase for you.

Wise Words at Manhattanville College | Women’s Leadership Institute’s 4th Annual Women’s Leadership Summit

‘Dare to be Bold’…was ‘Dare to Evolve’

So, the 800-pound elephant in the room is how we go forward after #Metoo, the Women’s March, and all the other movements that are happening.  This was addressed head on with the opening statements from Kathy Meany, the WLI Director, Laura Persky, the Director and The Honorable George Latimer.

As professionals, we had to admit there are tensions in our offices. When I mentioned that I was going to The Summit to my male colleagues, we could have heard a pin drop with the silence that followed. I found myself backpedaling for words to make the men understand that that didn’t mean they should be worried.

The Summit’s address for this was synonymous with mine. They gave me words like “as women, we aren’t here to analyze every action and word that comes out of a man’s mouth. There will still be pockets of outrage when the situations are just unduly repressive and harassing. But, we are past most of the ugly part.  Now, it is time for the moving forward.  And this moving forward with us—at your side as equals—will be AMAZING—because we can finally give all of ourselves.”

The goal of the summit to me were the answers to two vital questions:

  • How do we move forward and do great work with men, now?
  • How do we use this opportunity to be the BEST LEADERS for the advancement we envision and beyond?

HIGHLIGHTS

She called herself the Warm-up Band, 30- year Army Colonel, Col. (Ret.) Donna Brazil, was funny, knowledgeable and seasoned in successful leadership strategies.  She made us define ourselves, by defining the characteristics we gravitate to in our mentors and influencers.  She showed us that we too, have those qualities, that we probably weren’t using.

My take-away quote from her:  If you’re leading no one but yourself, you’re still LEADING.  (this gives me chills)

Kathy Meany, in her quirky and funny way, she makes networking tactics reminders fun. Always important to review.

Vanessa Wakemen, Business Owner and Seasoned Speaker told us a story of DIVERSITY.  Basically, she was in a situation of being a diversity hire in the 1990’s, as a 29 -year-old woman, and a woman of color.  Her story of what she did with it was amazing.  If you every get to speak with her, ask her about what her mother told her to do.

Lunch consisted of our Honorable Catherine Borgia, Westchester County Legislator, 9th District.  In the fashion of the day, Ms. Borgia was a perfect addition, with her down-to-Earth manner and ability to relate to most in the room, as a mother and career woman. I was proud to have someone from my home town, and also with whom I have had the pleasure of working.

We also heard from Manhattanville’s President, Mr. Michael Geisler, Keia Clark and Adriana Kierszenbaum, Esq as Food for thought to help us in our business with legal information and inspirational examples of success.

After lunch was really fun.  We played GAMESWith Gilda Bonannowhich got us ALL communicating on a higher level.

I know that sounds all hokey, but it was true, we had full bellies and brains, and were ready to LAUGH and exercise are qualities on each other.  The games consisted mainly of how to improvise.  Which improvising is what good leaders do with suggestions from talent in meetings to nurture, along with when confronted with situations.

The games were also great to take back to our teams. Gilda was funny and really lightened the intensity of our learning.

Who doesn’t like to play Yes, And.

MICRO-RESILIENCE –  OLYMPIC Medalist and Bestselling Author, BONNIE ST. JOHN graced us with multiple stories of triumph through adversity…and simple tactics to build RESILIENCE.

We heard of through odds of not just losing a leg as a child and growing up in a less-than wealthy family but suffering sexual abuse and the obvious obstacle of being a woman and a woman of color, she triumphed… all the way to a silver and two bronze medals in downhill events at the 1984 Paralympics in Innsbruck, Austria.

From her, we got inspired and listened to the concept of resilience.  She put it best when she said change isn’t slowing down, if anything it’s getting faster.  So, there won’t be that break time in the future, so learning resilience is how you strive and play to win.

A few take-away I got from Bonnie St. John to keep us in a direction of success:

  1. The Paralympics is the epitome of “not quite perfect” of Olympians. Use this as an example of just because something isn’t perfect looking, doesn’t mean that it won’t work. So, don’t wait to reach out to people, just because your elements aren’t ‘perfect’. Take a risk and do it.
  2. Designate a Zone for you to focus when you need to
  3. Working in teams works. When multiple people share a responsibility, your alliance to the team is better motivating than doing it alone.
  4. Define the REAL BOSS of your jobs. Put a picture of your end customer on your wall as the boss of your job(s), and every time you are deciding on a project, moving the company in a direction, ask yourself if this is the right move for the Boss.

In was an inspiring day that I know the women I met with make every effort to keep the afterglow alive until we meet again… or implement one to the techniques and reap the benefits.

The Women in the room gave me chills in terms of how open they were to learn for the betterment of, not only themselves, but of the environments and work cultures they want to cultivate.

I’m looking forward to next years Summit.  Thank you to The School of Business at Manhattanville College, and the Women’s Leadership Institute for the lessons and insights…and the cupcakes.

So, guys.  We’re in this together.

Social media is the new form of Radio advertising. Nothing changed in having to market. Just the media.

I hear on a daily basis how small businesses owners don’t like Facebook and Instagram.

Fact:

If you don’t use Facebook and Instagram, in your business marketing, you will be ignoring a majority of 90% of people in 2018.

So, as TV and Radio had the attention of those 20-100 yrs olds prior to this social age, Facebook and Instagram now do.

Prepare great campaigns for these. It will pay off. If you need help, ask us.

Summer break comes and goes so much faster when you are at the receiving end of an interested employer. But what do you do when all employers seem to have “checked out”?

This is the typical summer-break job hunting scenario:

There are times when employers tend to have more interest in their staffing. A month before the weather turns hot in the North East isn’t that time, unforturnately.

If you find yourself in this situation, you need to remember that your employers are most likely not trying to send you the wrong message. You probably just got caught in the “stack of papers”  that is not high-priority at the moment

Time to empathize with your employer:

Put yourself in their shoes. They have most likely been going guns-a-blazin since Jan 1, meeting project and sales goals…and now the spring buds have sprung and they are switching into ‘coasting mode’ until their vacations.

So, what are you to do?

DON’T SLACK. Start working on your longer game. Pretend you have the job.

What do I mean by this?

  1. Think FALL GOALS – Look at your list of prospective employers and assess whether you would be a great fit for them.
  2. (YOU SHOULD READ THIS . IT WORKS – TESTED and PROVEN)

Pick an Employer that is your TOP CHOICE and pretend you have been hired.

Then,

  1. Formulate what you would do to contribute to their business to make it grow.
  2. Put together a project that you would create and implement. Start working on the project as if you were employed.
    1. Put together the CONCEPT AND GOAL of the project,
    2. Put together the list of resources you’d need,
  • Put together the punch list for implementation of the project,
  1. If the project requires a team to implement, put together their punch lists.
  1. DEMONSTRATE YOUR KNOWLEDGE AND SUITABILITY FOR THE JOB. You can do this by creating a list of actionables that can be implemented immediately upon hiring.
  2. KEEP FOCUSED by going back to the CONCEPT AND GOAL mentioned above. Keeping focused is the hardest thing to do when you don’t have a MUSE, such as an employer or a place of employment with a brand and parameters that define work. So, find triggers that will motivate you to stay focused.

A few examples of how you can use these tips in your industry:

Example #1: If you are trying to get into Real Estate, come up with your pitch. Remember, competition is tough, so BE INNOVATIVE and find your edge. For example, you can start a blog like “Homes in New York that have never lost electricity” …anything to make you stand out.

Example #2:  You are trying to get a job as a salesperson in the Wholesale Diamond industry. Think of ways you can reach people with information they don’t already have. Then use instagram to generate a buzz with great visuals about information such as “how diamonds are cut to give them their shine”.

Example #3:

You are trying to get back into event planning after a 15-year break. You definitely learned new things during your break, so, show how they can add value in the corporate world. For example, create a concept on “picnic in the winter for your holiday party”.

REMEMBER, CORPORATE PLAYERS ARE PEOPLE TOO. They will want to understand your decision to come back after your time away, so give your come-back a fresh spin and put it into perspective for them. Make them see how your time off work makes you a valuabe person.

What will ‘Pretending You Have the Job’ do?

  1. This will give you actual CONTENT to speak about. That is, you will effectively shift  the conversation from about you and your unemployment to about YOUR IDEAS and KNOWLEDGE for enhancing the company.

  1. You will be able to write about your subject matter on employment blogs like Linkedin, which also serves as a reference when speaking to potential employers about ideas.

  1. In addition, it will give you a better opening line for your emails to potential employers. No longer will you be asking them if they have made a decision, (employers rarely answer such questions…), but you will be asking them questions that INSPIRE a thought path. This will in turn gain their respect and acknowledgement.

Here is an example of how You could frame your emails:

“Hi Jack/Jane,

I’ve been watching the tactics in play on the _________ selling, and think it could be used more like this __________.  I was wondering about your thoughts on the matter.

I’m sure you’re busy and things are probably entering the summer slowdown for decisions, but I’ll be formulating some ideas to discuss when you are able to sit down and talk about your needs in the role of __________.

REMEMBER, as demonstrated in this email:

GIVE IDEAS. The employer wants to hire someone who is going to make them look good and inspire them with ideas or better ways of doing tasks.

INSPIRE, and EMPATHIZE.  Again, put yourself in the employer’s shoes.

Bottom line: Follow this guide and it will serve to give you the right balance of enthusiasm and interest, and hide the anxiety of seeking a job while it is “quiet”.

I hope this has helped you.  Please let me know so I can address things I hadn’t known you were going through.
